In depth knowledge
We took the tour Chichen Itzá combined with a cenote and a brief stop in the colonial town of Valladolid and to visit a tequila distillery.
It was raining or should I say poring early morning when Jerry and his driver (sorry I forgot his name) picked us up from our accommodation by the Maya beach. There was a long drive ahead and Jerry told us a lot about Mexico on the way. He also allowed for napping to catch up on the lack of sleep we got taking off so early. Starting the tour early is essential to be everywhere before the crowds.
On the way we stopped at a small place where we could buy ourselves coffee and snacks and use the bathroom. There was plenty of chilled bottled water in Jerry's van so we didn't need to buy any.
At Chichen Itzá the crowds hadn't shown up so we walked between the buildings learning everything there is to know about the old Mayan history. Many of the things he told us came as a surprise for I thought like probably most people that all the sacrifices were ..... :-) and the games!
I found it great to follow in the footsteps of the Viking Baldur who apparently was there shortly before the year 1000 after leaving Iceland. This is from the Icelanders Sagas, not something Jerry told us :-)
When leaving Chichen Itzá we walked through some sales booths were locals were selling and making souvenirs. Well handcrafted and the sales people were not at all aggressive. Again we had an opportunity to get a cup of coffee and use the bathroom.
When visiting the cenote we were offered to go in and swim but since the weather wasn't to shout hurray for we skipped it. Of course Jerry told us all about how they are formed. After viewing the cenote we had a lunch buffet. Endless variations and all very tasty and well presented.
In Valladolid we learned a bit about the history of the town and how all the old towns are built up in similar way by the Spanish. We had a nice ice cream before we went to the tequila distillery. We tasted both good and bad tequila's and everything in between and had the opportunity to buy some.
On the way back Jerry kept telling us everything we wanted to know about Mexico and the ancient people that lived there.
After a long and joyful day we said goodbye to Jerry and his driver.
This is a kind of tour I would like to take in every place I visit.
Thank you Jerry for a great tour and a fun day.

Dear Jerry (Geraldo), Since you know and speak English so perfectly, I’m writing in English as it is faster for me to type than Spanish. Please forgive me.
Thank you so very much for the most memorable day and evening of touring to Tulum and later, dining and witnessing the incredible spectacle at Xcaret.
Your extensive knowledge of history, and more particularly of Mexican history, was of great benefit to me and greatly appreciated. As you certainly noticed I’m passionate about history, music and art. So the combination could not have been better.
Walking on the grounds of Tulum with your knowledgeable presentation took my imagination back in time so that I could sense the activity that took place on that site hundreds of years ago. I can’t begin to tell you what a thrill it was for me.
I was surprised the dinner at Xcaret was so delicious, knowing how difficult it is to prepare food and serve so many people at the same time. I already wrote Daniela to thank her for her hospitality and the exceptional seats she provided for us.
I also appreciated your quick sense of grasping my interests and taking me to see the wine cellar at Xcaret. That was phenomenal as was the equestrian presentation and the various actors in costumes as we approached the theater.
As for the spectacle of the show, it was without equal. Your commentary and explanations were very helpful in understanding the representation of the history that was unfolding before me. What an incredible and beautiful way to learn history! Frankly, not even being Mexican (but of Latino blood) I got rather emotional at the finale.
As for the wallet I lost, luckily I had taken out most of the money and put it in the safe back in my room, so I only lost about $30. As my Cuban stepfather would have said, “mas perdio España cuando perdio Cuba!” So it turned out to be inconsequential. 9I lost much more when I was pick-pocketed in Paris!) Thank you and the driver for your concern and helping in the search. The fault was totally mine.
It was truly a pleasure to meet you and frankly I was honored beyond measure to be provided with my personal driver and personal guide. The attention to detail, whether it was a wet towel, cold water or my general comfort that I received from both of you will long be remembered.
Sincerely, Frank ;-) Frank Herbert Pérez 3581 S Ocean Blvd, Apt 8E S Palm Beach, FL 33480-5769 561-585-0955 [email protected]

Excellent tour

with Gerardo and discovered many famous places like: Chichen-Itza, Valladolid,

I have gone on a
tour with Gerardo twice, to Chichen Itza. He is a wonderful guide. I don't know
if there is anyone as knowledgeable about Mayan Ruins as him. He truly loves
what he is doing, and it shows. One of the times that we were at Chichen Itza,
he was explaining what we were looking at, and little by little, other people
that were not in our group, started wandering over into our group to listen to
him. They were also intrigued by his knowledge and history of this wonderful
place. That is a great compliment to his talent! I'm sure I will travel to
Chichen Itza again, and I would not go unless I could have Gerardo as my guide!
He and Chichen Itza are the best! Jane Jalowitz /Wisconsin USA.

Gerardo has been
helping my family and I arrange special tours in and around Cancun for over 10
years. We met when I was looking for someone to take us to some birding areas
in the Yucatan. Gerardo, working with Luis Ku, was one of the first tour guides
to understand the value of birding and ecotourism. Subsequently, he has taken
us to Sian Kaan, Muyil, Chetumal, Chacchoben, Bacalar and other areas. A few
years ago, I was hosting a reunion for some law school chums and asked him if
he could set up a special tour to Chichen Itza. His tour (his wife led our
group) was excellent. On one days notice, he also set up a special trip for one
of my law school friends to Coba. This year, we are going out west to explore
another part of the Yucatan peninsula. I have enough confidence in my friend,
Gerardo, to be completely comfortable with whatever he comes up with. Sandy
Sagalkin / USA.

Geraldo is an
excellent tour guide. He speaks English very good. He is knowledgeable and very
friendly. We had lot of fun. I would definitely recommend him to others. Paru

Gerardo was an excellent tour leader. He was always enthusiastic, even with a few unenthusiastic clients. He spoke very good english, there were no communication issues at all. He managed us as a group with a lot of skill and patience, and we always got to where we had to be on time. His knowledge of the ancient Mayan civilization and of Mexico in general was amazing, and we learnt a lot through him. We could not have asked for a better tour leader, and if I do another tour in Mexico I would love to have Gerardo again.Tanya Golubeva/ Russia. |
I have known Gerry for over 20 years now. When I lived and worked for a DMC in Cancun, Mexico Gerry was one of our top notch, preferred tour guides for our high level incentive clients. And, over the years I have requested him time and time again to look after my valued clients. Gerry's knowledge of the destination, passion for his country and his love of sharing it with others is unmatched by any other. I am very proud that Gerry now has his own company and wish him the very best. I will no doubt hire Gerry again and highly recommend him to anyone. Beth Lockwood – NY/USA

My father and I spent a week with Gerardo in the Yucatan. He was unfailingly knowledgeable, effective, fun to be around, and a true gentleman. He has a great way with people, and he clearly loves his work. He is particularly expert at nature and wildlife, and though that was not our primary interest, we enjoyed sharing his knowledge. His suggestions were always excellent and he really took care of us. Plus he put up with my off-and-on Spanish. Heather Meeker – CA/USA.

Gerardo Ham was an excellent tour guide, and he showed us many things we had not anticipated. I highly recommend him for future guests. We were all very impressed with the Hacienda Xcanatun. The accommodations were terrific, and it certainly exceeds the standards expected of Ritz Carlton customers. Thank you very much for arranging an excellent trip. We appreciate your help very much. También me gustaría comentar que el guía Gerardo Ham hizo un excelente trabajo ya que logró captar la atención de la mayoría del grupo e interesarlos desde la geografía del país hasta el grandioso pasado Maya de la región. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed this trip. The cities and archaeological sites were visited were fantastic. I could not select a favorite as each was different and offered different experiences. Gerardo Ham was incredible. He was happy, energetic and a great problem solver. He went above and beyond to plan special "treats" for us--from a special tour of the tunnels to Guanajuato to musical entertainment in several of the hotels. He was a delight to talk to and was a great representative of Mexico. Gerardo was perhaps the best tour director I have ever had, and have been on many tours. He had an incredible amount of information that he was able to share with us--taking us from pre-Columbian times to modern times. He could give us historical references, cultural references, and personal experiences. It made for a great three-dimensional look at this part of Mexico. Thank you so much for a fantastic trip. Joanne Ganshirt – Chicago/Illinois.

Arq. Francisco Pérez Arellano – Guadalajara/Mexico..

Gerardo is the best guide I have ever. Having taken 20+ student and adult groups to Mexico, Spain, Africa and Costa Rica; I have seen many guides. He is the best. He is knowledgeable. He relates very well to students and adults. He is flexible. He knows how to engage their listeners. He makes a lasting impression. If you really want to have a good time learning about Mexico, he is the one, ask him for a quote. Pat Neff - Texas/USA.

We were two Australian families (4 adults and 5 children aged between 9 and 13) who wanted to see Chichen Itza. After doing a lot of research on line I came across Jerry. I decided to go with him because I was dealing direct with the guide rather than a booking agency. He was very well spoken and made the 10 hour day very enjoyable. His driver Fernando was very social and had a great van that fitted us all. Jerry was an excellent guide as he portrayed the story of Chichen Itza and the Mayans. He kept the kids involved all day with jokes and questions. We also had a swim and lunch at a Cenote plus a visit to the Spanish town of Valladolid. Thanks for the day Jerry. My wife and I had the pleasure and the privilege to spend a day with Gerardo this 30th of December of 2011. We were in fact following my brother-in-law Louis Imbaud who is a well known ornithologist in the province of Quebec (Canada). Louis has the need to see and identify ALL the birds in the world. Really. And so we spent the whole day doing just that. Not being a bird expert myself I have to say that I did have a great day. Teaming with Gerardo was Louis, a Spanish speaking local bird expert. Quickly, the two Louis were speaking the same language and identifying birds by the dozens through ear and eye! Very impressive! Gerardo has intensive knowledges of the local history and traditions. Through him we have discovered many plants and trees, from their medical uses to the chicle (natural gum) from the sapodilla tree. We found Gerardo to be most interesting and very simpatico. So we thank you Gerardo, for our time on vacation is precious and this day is sure to bring us great memories in the years to come. Hasta la vista amigo!

With Jerry we left Cancun by car and headed out to the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza. On the way, we even stopped for some authentic tacos with the hottest green peppers we have ever experienced! Once we arrived at Chichen Itza, Jerry took us on an interesting and detailed walking tour of the ancient site. We were able to understand what each site represented and how amazing the ancient Mayans were.
We had always wanted to swim in a Cenote, and this was one of the things that Jerry incorporated into our tour. It was the first time we had seen a Cenote and it was absolutely awesome and the water was beautiful and crystal clear! Cenote Ikkil is also where we had lunch, with a lovely buffet of fish, pork, chicken, salads, fruit and dessert. After our lunch and swim in Cenote Ikkil, we headed out to the beautiful Colonial Town of Valladolid. On our way we drove through the little towns where the descendants of the ancient Maya reside, and got to witness how they live today. Once we arrived in Valladolid, Jerry took us on a walking tour through the Town Hall, and the Church where there are some amazing works of art, and sacred relics. We learned so much from Jerry about the merging of cultures and religions between the ancient Mayans and the Spanish. Jerry's knowledge of history, culture and religion is amazing and to be able to hear this all in English is unbelievable! I would recommend Jerry's tours to anybody wanting a tour that is especially tailored to their needs! Christy and Ashley /Sydney, Australia. |
Jerry's fee was not cheap, but it was worth every penny, ten times over. I would pay it again in a heartbeat. My 15-year old history-hating daughter, whose cell phone did not work in Mexico (thank goodness!), quietly listened to Jerry while he expounded on the geology of the Yucatan and how it influenced the Mayan way of life and crop cycles, etc in the car. Jerry engaged her all day with conversation and occasional questions - not enough to embarrass her, but enough to make her feel included and important. And when we got to Chichen Itza, she was absolutely rapt with attention at the stories that Jerry told about the temple, the incredible precision of the Mayan astronomy, the ball court and the winners' "reward", and how the sacrifices were made. It was really fun to see history come alive for her for probably the first time in her life (her high school history teachers could learn a few teaching techniques from Jerry!). In fact, when we got back to our resort (where we had been for 2+ days already), she looked around in amazement at the decor in the bar and the pool area and said, "This looks like the carvings we saw at Chichen Itza! They decorated the whole resort like Chichen Itza! There's the snake! There's the jaguar!" etc. If we ever go to Cancun again, we will definitely go on another trip with Jerry - he started out as a tour guide, but by the end of the day he was our friend.
